Once a person realized, accepted and learned that they are not well knowledgeable enough, able, skilled or not good enough to do whatever particular task, this is called learned helplessness. Every people have learned helplessness which keeps them away in trying their best in things that will help them stretch or lengthen their limitations. This is considered a problem that limits a person in trying doing anything or getting better over something.
While people grow and understand things, there are various incidents and situations that teach them on what task they are not capable of doing. It can be an ability, task or skills. One area that children develop this kind of mentality is in school, this is the place where they mingle with other people and able to compare others capability from them. Once they observed that others kids are much better or excel than them, the feeling of helplessness starts to developed.
What Initiates the Feelings of Helplessness
Another factor that initiates the feeling of helplessness is the way their parents treat them. It was said that it’s inside a home where a child develop behavior and skills that is commonly being adopted from their parents and guardian, once their parents keeps on making them feel down or not enough and frankly telling them that they are not good enough or they can never be good enough. This makes them feel down and develop negative behavior. At the early age, they learned to establish limitations to themselves that give negative impacts on the way they act, treat, talk and understand others especially themselves.
How to Overcome the Condition
The main question is how can people be able to deal with them or overcome learned helplessness? Is there any hope for them to change and eventually grow? Since the major factor why they become like it is the perception that has been put in their mind, they been used in being unable to the point that they stop trying to do things that will challenge them. Their mind accepted the fact that it was fate that put them to their position. They do work with limitation, keeps on giving excuses for not able of doing anything. They keep on relying to others abilities and skills, sometimes they just simply changing and forgetting their commitment which makes them stagnant in the level of learned helplessness.
The only escape or out of the learned helplessness is consistently being challenged and having successful experiences. This helps them overcome their limitations and self confidences were being boost. But first, they need to set a clear goal but eventually the critical part is mentality of consistency. It’s important they able to be consistent on their action to meet their goals. They also need to recognize the importance of setting goals that are not ambitious or impossible because this will only make them feel the same and stay on the learned helplessness stage.
A person who suffers from this condition may seek professional help as well, this will make them feel better and guide them towards the challenge. They must be motivated to overcome these weaknesses to be able to survive the challenges and boost confidence or self belief that will help them achieve what orders can.
