How to Beat OCD Intrusive Thoughts

People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) naturally has uncontrollable or recurring behaviors and thoughts that they often feel obliged to repeat endlessly. This disorder is known to have an impact on children, adolescents, and adults. Although there are no known causes for this condition, some of the risk factors include brain structure, environment and genetics.

Most of those who have OCD, are unable to control their behaviors and thoughts, even as they have recognized that such thoughts are already excessive. Most of them may have experienced intrusive thoughts, but this can be overcome by learning to have control over it. Thus, it is essential to get to know what these thoughts are and how to deal with them.

It Is Ego-Dystonic in Nature

These thoughts are supposed to be very opposite of the character that you have. You are having them because naturally you are against them. So the moment you perceive it as a threat to you, it will be flagged as important by your own brain.

Don’t Fear to Act Against an Intrusive Thought

Since you are afraid of such thoughts, it would be so difficult to ignore it. As a result, you are currently suffering because of it. It is also not possible to suddenly reverse the character that you have or consider it acceptable acting on it. As a kind, good and moral person, you are bound to suffer like this.

Problem Lies in Analyzing the Thought

Normally, people have some intrusive thoughts every now and then. However, only those who suffer from OCD will react on them for longer because it is imprinted in the brain as important thoughts. So the more you pay attention to it, the longer it will stick around.

This can be averted by accepting that you are going to have these thoughts and learn to understand that you are in control of them so that you can go on with your life. So, even as they reside in your head, you will learn to be confident that they will fade away once you ignore them. Thus, it will show the brain that these are not threats.

Spiking Can Be Good

The increased symptoms of OCD due to intrusive thoughts that may catch your attention are referred to as spiking. Sufferers will feel so uncomfortable that they often avoid being in that situation. Nevertheless, it is accordingly a good thing as it will enable one to practice techniques for recovery. Getting used to uncomfortable situations can actually enable you to face your fear and prove that you are indeed in control.

Avoid Backdoor Spikes

Upon noticing that your anxiety has faded, it is then that you have started to recover. Understandably, you have begun to comprehend that thoughts are ludicrous but unthreatening. The backdoor spike can happen if you will think that you have not suffered anxiety after an intrusive thought, it will be your reaction to ponder in fear having known that you have become your greatest fear.

Take note that the moment learn that you have the tools to beat your disorder, you will suffer even more anxiety in the beginning. However, this will lead to a long-term solution, which is a lot better compared to temporary relief.
