Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale

There are many people today who are experience anxiety. Anxiety is a horrible state in the inner turmoil as it usually comes with several nervous behaviors. Some of these nervous behaviors are somatic complaints, rumination, and pacing back and forth. The unpleasant feeling that it can give to a person can give him or her feeling of forthcoming death.

Some people believe that anxiety is similar with fear, which is wrong. Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness, and fear. It is often oversimplified as an overreaction in an alarming situation. This usually attacks with muscular tension, fatigue, concentration issues, and restlessness. Even though this is infrequently felt by individuals, this is not a normal reaction for patients.

There is a scale today which has been made and designed for people to test the level or rating of their anxiety. This scale is called as zung self-rating anxiety scale. Zung self-rating anxiety scale or SAS was built by William W. K. Zung. He was a psychiatrist in the University of Duke. He made this kind of scale to measure the rate of anxiety of a certain person. This is not like the other scales that you usually see in different places. It comes with lots of questions that should be answered by a patient. The result of it will be assessed and will give information about the rate of his or her anxiety.

The Zung Scale

The Zung self-rating anxiety scale is made just like the questionnaire in a survey. It has 20 items self-report examinations that will measure your level of anxiety. The rating process of it usually gets from the 4 groups of demonstration. These are the symptoms in the central nervous system, motor, cognitive, and automatic. While a person is answering the given questions, he or she must point out how much every statement or question is being applied to him or herself. Every question or statement should be scored of 4 answers such as most of the time, some of the time, good part of the time, and a little of the time. And the general examination of it is being performed through the presence of total score.

The overall raw score rage of it is 20 to 80. The raw score requires to be converted in the anxiety index score through the use of a chart. The anxiety index score can be utilized in the scales listed below in analyzing the clinical interpretation of anxiety rate in a certain person:

• 75 to 80 – great anxiety level.
• 60 to 74 – noticeable to harsh anxiety level.
• 45 to 59 – placid to temperate anxiety level.
• 20 to 44 – average range anxiety level.

The common questions included in the Zung self-rating anxiety scale are:

• I feel more anxious and nervous in comparing to the former days.
• I easily get easily tired and weak.
• I can sit with ease and feel calm always.
• I usually feel afraid without reasons.
• I feel panicky and easily get distress.

With this information about zung self-rating anxiety scale, many people will encourage to try this scale so see the level of their anxiety. If they see that they have a high anxiety level, it will be better for them to consult in their doctor. This way, they can get an immediate and safe medication to get relieved and get back on their usual way of living.
