6 Psychodynamic Approach Strengths and Weaknesses

There are many things that currently happen to people but are very difficult to explain. One scenario involves someone who drinks a lot in a party and often being the center of attraction for many. However, when he or she wakes up, no memory of all that partying the night before can be recalled. Sometimes, one has a feeling of sadness or loneliness when being sober, but not when under the influence of liquor. Perhaps it has already happened to many individuals, which led them to seek a psychologist.

Psychodynamic approach is something that psychologists use to solve this dilemma. Eventually, he or she will be able to associate events in the past that point to the solution to this problem. But how does it really become significant? Will psychodynamic approach be a positive or negative influence to your personal life? To address all that, here are some strengths and weaknesses to justify the use of psychodynamic models.

List of Strengths of Psychodynamic Approach

1. Past Events Influencing Current Behavior
More often than not, this technique will help you focus on your past, mainly on your childhood. Accordingly, this can have an impact to your present behavior. So if you experienced being drunk but forgot all that happened the night before, you may have an alcoholic parent that just have stimulated your drinking behavior.

2. Recognition of Subconscious to Affect Behavior
Some people feel lonely and sad when sober, but experience otherwise when drunk. A psychodynamic approach can help you recognize about the unconscious which can have an impact on behavior. So when your therapist taps your unconscious, you associate the love of your mother with alcohol. This approach seeks the deepest portion of an individual to heal him or her from the inside out.

3. Encourage People to Have More Therapy
People who have undergone psychodynamic healing actually felt better and seek to come back to have more therapy. So either this technique really works or it’s just that people simply want someone who listens to what they say without judging them.

List of Weaknesses of Psychodynamic Approach

1. Ignores Biological Components
Although there are strong psychological evidence about this technique, it can disregard any biological components that can be associated to this scenario. Basically, when talking about addiction, there is a genetic or biological predisposition on this matter that can be hard to ignore.

2. Hard for Others to Accept this Belief
Lots of people don’t find this a fitting way to solve the problem at hand. This is due to the fact that others may find it hard to believe that their behavior and thoughts can be influenced by their subconscious.

3. Insurance Does Not Cover It
When it comes to psychodynamic therapy, many people may wonder if it will be covered by their insurance providers. Since this involves healing using the subconscious, it can lead to certain results that can’t be favorable for some.

There are compelling results when it comes to healing using psychodynamic approach. However, there are also those that create confusion towards the outcome. Perhaps it would be wise to weigh the strengths and weaknesses prior to undergoing with this type of approach. An individual must be fully aware so that consequences shouldn’t cause any problem to the patient and the professional.
